Young Medicinal Chemists

Young Medicinal Chemists (YMC) is a professional association that brings together students from bachelor to the PhD level, as well as Postdocs in Medicinal Chemistry.

We are a vibrant community and help members develop both scientifically and professionally, through a number of activities, such as Career days, Lunch hour talks, Project dating, Poster session days, Symposia and Company visits. Check out our calendar for details and upcoming activities.

Marie Louise Gram

Hi, I am Marie and I am a PhD-student in Prof. Mikael Bols’ group, where I on a regularly basis handle cocaine. I graduated as an engineer in medicinal and synthetic chemistry from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in July 2021 and then decided that after five years, I should try something new at KU Chemistry. My PhD-project involves synthesis of cocaine analogues coupled to proton-sensitive fluorophores and investigation of the protonation state in cellular systems and purified proteins. In my free time, my interests include drinking wine whilst knitting and playing both Zelda and Pokémon on Nintendo Switch.

Effimia Valavani

Hey! My name is Effie, I come from Greece and I’m in my second year of MSc Medicinal Chemistry. For my master thesis I work with synthesis of natural products as leads in CNS drug discovery. I have a BSc in Chemistry and for my thesis I worked on the synthesis of SGLT2 inhibitors for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. In my free time you’ll find me either having beers with friends, at the cinema or at music concerts.

Francesco Bavo

Originally from Italy, I moved to Copenhagen for my post doctoral research in the Frølund group. During my PhD studies in Milan I developed ligands for neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, while I am now working on the design and synthesis of inhibitors for GABA transporters and GABA receptors. Besides being fascinated by medicinal chemistry and chemical biology, I love playing volleyball, cooking, playing the saxophone and meeting new people over a good fresh beer!

Nienke Julia Dekker

Hi! My name is Nienke. I absolutely love cakes and baking, which might explain my interest in carbohydrates 😉 Besides that, I am also a second-year Medicinal Chemistry master student from the Netherlands. Currently, I work on my master thesis in the group of Ass. Prof. Christian Marcus Pedersen, where I am part of a project developing a male contraceptive. Although I have a background in Pharmaceutical Sciences, I am interested in pretty much anything that has to do with Medicinal Chemistry. In my spare time, you can find me reading a good book or meeting up with my friends.

Catalina Lucile Bigalke

Hey, I’m Catalina a second year MSc. of Medicinal Chemistry student. Currently, I am working on my thesis, which is concerned with the derivatization of a lead compound for a non-hormonal male contraceptive in the group of Ass. Prof. Christian Marcus Pedersen. My parents are from Chile and Germany, but I lived in the Netherlands for the most recent years of my life, where I did my BSc in Chemistry. In my free time I like to cook, inline skate and love to play games in my free time, be it single player, multiplayer, online, offline or board games.
